World number 102 Andy Hicks defeated David Gilbert 6-5 in a fourth successive match to advance to the Cazoo UK Championship quarter-finals.

Devon’s Hicks has defeated Liang Wenbo, Michael Holt, Dominic Dale, and now Gilbert in York, winning each time in the final frame. Hicks, who is by far the lowest-ranked player left in the tournament, will now face Barry Hawkins, who defeated Matthew Selt 6-3.

Gilbert and Hicks played the first four sets tonight, with Gilbert hitting 81 and 54 and Hicks hitting 67 and 88. Gilbert scored a brilliant double to a centre pocket before adding the blue to pull ahead in frame five, which came down to a safety fight on the brown.

Hicks sealed the win at 4-4 with breaks of 67 and 82 in the next two frames, then won the ninth frame to take the lead. Gilbert took a 51-10 lead in frame ten, then came back to tie the game at 5-5 with an excellent long pot on the third last red.

Gilbert’s missed red to a centre pocket early in the decider let Hicks in for a 56-point rampage. Gilbert, world number 22, fought for a chance to reply, but Hicks picked off loose reds and won the frame 75-0.

Hawkins came back from a 3-1 deficit to win five straight frames against Selt, advancing to the quarter-finals for only the second time in his career and the first time since 2013. The Londoner has only decided to give up seven frames in the tournament, but he was on the edge of being knocked out tonight when he got off to a slow start.

Selt led 3-1 at the break with top breaks of 73 and 88, but Hawkins fought back with a 99-yard run and the sixth to tie the game. Hawkins missed a mid-range pot to the top corner in frame seven, but Selt then failed to convert a difficult pot to the other corner and soon found himself 4-3 down.
