Chris Paul obtained the career milestone of scoring 20,000 points as his Phoenix Suns upset the Los Angeles Lakers 115-105 on a dramatic night in California

Chris Paul became the first player in NBA history to reach 20,000 points and 10,000 assists during the second quarter of the game between the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. Paul reached the milestone on a free throw during the second quarter.

Paul had 23 points and 14 assists, becoming the first player in NBA history to reach 20,000 points and 10,000 assists, while Devin Booker had 14 points and 14 assists for the defending Western Conference champs.

“It means a lot,” Paul said on Friday. “I got a chance to go home yesterday with my family, my parents, my brother. Everybody sort of surprised me with, like, a Zoom toast with a lot of people who meant a lot [to me]. Especially to have my dad sitting right next to me meant a lot because my dad is the one who the ball in my hands, and I appreciate him for it.

The winless Lakers lacked pressure as tensions between teammates Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard flared off the court during a break, with Rajon Rondo also getting into an altercation with a heckling fan.

The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-112, the Washington Wizards defeated the Indiana Pacers 135-134 in overtime, and the New York Knicks defeated the Orlando Magic 121-96.

The Brooklyn Nets, the Knicks’ crosstown rivals, defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 114-109 thanks to Kevin Durant’s 29 points and James Harden’s 20.

The Boston Celtics were defeated 115-83 by the Toronto Raptors in their home opener, while Houston Rockets centre Christian Wood shot 13 for 19 from the floor to lead the Houston Rockets to a 124-91 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The reigning MVP Nikola Jokic scored 32 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 102-96 victory against the San Antonio Spurs, the Chicago Bulls demolished the New Orleans Pelicans 128-112, and the Sacramento Kings suffered their first loss of the season, falling 110-101 to the Utah Jazz.
