Manchester United has been knocked out of the EFL Cup after West Ham handed them their defeat in the third round of the tournament at Old Trafford.

Manuel Lanzini, mid-field attacker of West Ham in the 9th minute of the match guided the ball into the nets of Manchester United following a low cross from Ryan Fredricks, securing a lead for his team.

After conceding the goal early in the 9th minute of the match. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had chances to level it. The side attempted 27 shots on the goalpost, the best of which came when forward Mason Greenwood missed a one-on-one chance moments after coming on as a substitute on 62 minutes, forcing West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into a save with his feet.

Solskjaer admitted that his team could have done better at their home but also boasted about his players saying that he was impressed by his player’s work rate on the night despite the result.

The two teams met twice this week, where Manchester United defeated West Ham in the first match with the scoreline of 2-1 in the Premier League match on Sunday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked a completely different side to the one that led his team to gain victory against the visitors in their premier league match.

United did not include Cristiano Ronaldo, midfielder Paul Pogba and defender Raphael Varnae in the squad following the busy run of matches.

For David Moyes and his men, it was their first triumph at Old Trafford since Hammers Carlos Tevez’s match-winning goal in 2007 which helped them to stay in the Premier League.

Manchester United will next face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, while West Hammers will fly to Leeds.
