The match at Old Trafford got off to the worst possible start for Saints, who saw Alexandre Jankewitz shown a straight red card for a nasty challenge on Scott McTominay just two minutes in.
United’s first breakthrough came from a surprise source, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who scored his second ever goal for the club.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Jan Bednarek’s own goal made it 4-0 before half-time.
The half-time substitutions of Cavani and Shaw saw United take time to regain their fluency, and Southampton thought they’d pulled one back when Che Adams took advantage of some slack defending to slot past David de Gea.
And the goals kept coming in the second half with two-goal sub Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, from the spot, and a late Dan James strike adding to Southampton’s misery.
The Reds stay second after this victory, but they are again level on 44 points with table-topping Manchester City but Pep Guardiola’s leaders are ahead on goal difference and also have two games in hand over their city rivals.
