Liverpool and Manchester United face a fierce battle with Bayern Munich in the race to sign £37m RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this summer, according to the Mirror.

The 22-year-old is a wanted man after some dominant performances at the heart of RB Leipzig’s defence this season.

Jurgen Klopp has identified French centre back Upamecano as a possible target as he tries to bolster his defensive options following the injury crisis at Anfield.

But Klopp has all but ruled out the chances of Liverpool signing a defender during the January transfer window, leaving the door open for Solskjaer to bring Upamecano to United this month.

Chelsea are said to view the Frenchman as a potential long-term replacement for veteran centre-back Thiago Silva, while speculation regarding United’s interest has repeatedly hit the headlines.

The Red Devils pulled the plug on further talks after Upamecano’s father became involved in negotiations.

The Sun claim that United are better positioned to snap the talented Frenchman up next summer.

On a move for the defender, the United boss had said: “There’s always rumours and speculation about other players and Manchester United.

“I don’t want to comment on every player we’re linked to. Since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.”

However, should they fail in their pursuit, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane as an alternative.
