Lionel Messi has tested negative for COVID-19 and is currently back in France, where he will start training “in the next few days,” according to Paris Saint-Germain.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner tested positive for the virus last week in Argentina but returned to Paris on Wednesday.
On Monday, he was absent from PSG’s 4-0 French Cup victory against Vannes. The club has not stated whether Messi will be available for their first Ligue 1 encounter following the winter break, which takes place at Lyon on Sunday.
“Leo Messi’s COVID-19 test resulted in a negative result. He landed in Paris and will rejoin the group in the coming days, “PSG made the announcement in a statement.
Messi has had a difficult start to life in Paris following his dramatic departure from Barcelona last summer.
He has only one goal in 11 league games for PSG, but he has five goals in the Champions League.
The French capital club also said that full-back Layvin Kurzawa tested positive for COVID on Wednesday and was placed in self-isolation.
In the last week, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, defender Juan Bernat, back-up keeper Sergio Rico, midfielder Danilo Pereira, and young Nathan Bitumazala have all tested positive for COVID.
