Wales and Switzerland battled to a 1-1 draw in their opening European Championship match at the Olympic Stadium in Baku.

Wales who had the best chance of the first half when a Kieffer Moore header forced a smart save from Yann Sommer.

The Swiss took the lead early in the second half, after squandering several chances, they eventually scored as the impressive Breel Embolo headed in from Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner.

Kieffer Moore equalised for Wales with glancing header with 16 minutes to go.
The Dragons opt for a short corner routine and it pays dividends with Morrell eventually floating a delightful centre in from the right. The dangerous Moore evades the attentions of his marker and sends an impressive glancing header into the far corner, leaving Sommer with no chance.

Substitute Mario Gavranovic thought he’d won it for Switzerland with a late volley, but it was ruled out after a VAR check.

Switzerland kept pressing for a winner deep into added time but were denied by a series of brilliant saves from Danny Ward.

Such was the intensity of the late Swiss pressure, a draw will have felt like a great relief for Wales, whose next game is against Turkey in Baku on Wednesday.

Vladimir Petković, Switzerland coach speaking to “We certainly created many chances. We perhaps should have finished off one or two of them. It’s disappointing, but we’re not too displeased with our performance.”

“I see it as a glass half full. We dominated the game for large periods and were better than them in many areas. We just switched off for ten minutes and ended up conceding a goal.”

Rob Page, Wales coach, speaking to BBC Sport: “We had to compete defensively, but with the pace and quality we have in our team it always makes for an entertaining game.”

“Kieffer has been terrific at international and club level, he’s got a great touch and his link-up play is great. He’s got all the attributes for a centre forward, he’s given us the rewards today.”
