The German Bundesliga looks set to be the first of Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues to resume amid the coronavirus pandemic after the federal government gave the go-ahead earlier this month. German chancellor Angela Merkel told regional authorities that competition could restart in the second half of May.

Bundesliga 2020/21 resumes from tomorrow, with the league heavyweights Borussia Dortmund taking on Schalke 04 in its first game on return. Borussia Dortmund will play host to Schalke in Germany’s biggest football stadium without the fans.

International Football Association Board (IFAB) has permitted Five substitutes per team when the Bundesliga returns tomorrow.

Probable line-up: Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre confirmed that both Axel Witsel and Emre Can would join Marco Reus, Nico Schulz and Dan-Axel Zagadou on the absentee list.

Dortmund XI: Bürki – Piszczek, Hummels, Akanji – Hakimi, Brandt, Delaney, Guerreiro – Sancho, Haaland, Hazard

Probable line-up: Schalke

A trio of defensive stalwarts will miss the Revierderby for Schalke with Ozan Kabak, Benjamin Stambouli and Omar Mascarell all unavailable for when head coach David Wagner chooses his 11.
