Copa America 2021 Semifinal: Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the hero as Argentina defeated Colombia on penalties to set Argentina’s dream final with Brazil.
Argentina made a fast start, scoring after just six minutes with a fantastic through ball from Giovani Lo Celso to Messi, who set a new Copa America record with his fifth assist of the tournament to find Lautaro Martínez for the opener.
Colombia got on the board in the second half as Luis Diaz found an opening down the side of the box before completing a ridiculous finish to level the score.
After 90 minutes could not separate both the teams, the match went straight to penalties according to rules, which states only the Copa final had to go in extra time should the need arise.
In what was supposed to be a nervy affair for the Argentines, Emi Martinez, who seemed to be playing classic mind games on the penalty takers, turned hero with three saves to take Argentina through.
Brazil is looking to defend its Copa America crown while Argentina is looking for its first international trophy in the Messi era.
The two soccer heavyweights will meet Saturday, July 10 at 8 p.m. ET (Sunday, July 11: 5:30 AM IST).
Ecuador and Colombia will play in the third-place game Friday, July 9 at 8 p.m. ET.
