In a thrilling semi-final match of T20 World Cup 2021 between New Zealand and England, it was a 5 hard-fought 5 wicket victory for New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell who scored his first fifty of the tournament scored 72*(47) to become the man of the match award. New Zealand chasing 167 got to the target with 1 over to spare.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium, probably the best ground in the UAE this tournament to score runs was hosting the first semi-final, and New Zealand opted to bowl first, considering dew would play a big role in the latter part of the match.

England who were missing their in-form opener Jason Roy didn’t have the best of start, as England’s attacking batting line-up could only get 40 runs in the powerplay, at the cost of 1 wicket.

Jos Buttler, the top run-scorer for England in the tournament also got leg before wicket to Ish Sodhi after getting 29 off 24 balls. It was a 63 runs partnership between David Malan and Moeen Ali which ticked England’s scoreboard.

Just when it felt that England might get restricted to 150, David Malan’s 41(30), Moeen Ali’s 51(37) and 10 ball 17 from Liam Livingstone helped England to get 166 in the 20 overs.

New Zealand who were yet to perform with the bat in the tournament came into chase 167 and there couldn’t have been the worst start for them as they lost Martin Guptill and Skipper Kane Williamson in the first 3 overs.

Black Caps were 13 for 2 before David Conway and Daryl Mitchell fetched an 82 runs stand and gave New Zealand to have a chance to go forward in the game after losing 2 quick wickets.

David Conway and Glenn Phillips wicket in quick succession almost took New Zealand out of the game where Black Caps needed 57 runs in 4 overs, James Neesham’s 2 sixes in Chris Jordan’s 17th over changed the fate for New Zealand, as they got 23 runs in the over, which proved out to be the most expensive over of the match.

Adil Rashid who came into the bowl in the 18th over also conceded 14 runs. Rashid got the wicket of Neesham on the last ball, but it was 20 runs more for New Zealand in 2 overs.

Daryl Mitchell who was batting since the first over, was batting slow but had preserved his best of shots for the best of the time and hit two consecutive wickets in the 19th over of Woakes to secure his team a position in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2021.

Pakistan will face Australia in the second semi-final on 11th November.
