The 26-year old made them pay as he shifted his gears and spurted off to craft his first ton against India. With Wade alongside, the duo frustrated the bowlers and just when they looked like they were on course for a big first-innings total, Natarajan, the other debutant hit twice in quick succession in the final session. Thakur, who was expensive in his opening two spells, the rest of the Indian bowling did well.

But skipper Paine and Green held fort to ensure there was no more damage done. Australia is 5-259, with Tim Paine (31) and Cameron Green (20) at the crease.

India suffered a double blow before the start of the match with Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah ruled out due to injury. T Natarajan and Washington Sundar made their debuts for India in Test cricket. Ashwin and Bumrah’s absence adds to India’s growing list of injuries already consisting of KL Rahul, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Hanuma Vihari and Ravindra Jadeja.
