Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar, Hit the Fifties An outstanding 8-wicket win for SunRisers Hyderabad as they move to the number 5th place due to their superior run rate in Indian Premier League.

SunRisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner won the toss and opted to field. The Hyderabad-based franchise is missing out on the services of Kane Williamson because of an injury. Jason Holder has been handed an opportunity.Shahbaz Nadeem replaces Basil Thampi marking the second change for SRH. Rajasthan Royals has gone in with the same lineup.

Early dismissal of Robin Uthappa, Samson and Stokes added 56 runs for the second wicket and just when it looked like Samson would go on to get that big score, the 25-year-old played a reckless shot and was knocked over for a 26-ball 36. Before the dust had settled, Rashid put an end to Stokes’ misery in the very next over. The left-hander only scored 30 off 32 deliveries and that put extra pressure on the other Rajasthan Royals batsmen.

The onus was on Steve Smith (19) and Jos Buttler (9) to score some quick runs but before the latter could do any destruction, Shankar had him caught at backward point. Shankar was outstanding with his medium pace and finished with figures of 1/15 in three overs.

Before the two batsmen could get that momentum, Holder (3/13) returned to bowl the penultimate over and dismissed Smith (15-ball 19) and Parag (12-ball 20) to halt Rajasthan’s progress. Jofra Archer, however, smoked a couple of lusty blows in the final over and impelled Rajasthan Royals to give fighting total 154 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Manish Pandey, MoM: There were enough talks around our middle order. High time for us to perform. I just wanted to stay on the wicket and play my shots. Really happy that it came off today. We had the opportunity to win the game for SRH, really happy I’m standing here. We had plans to see Jofra off. We had a plan to take on the leggies and Indian bowlers, and it paid off. The first ball I middled through covers and I tried to keep my shape. I was hitting it well and I tried to get my team over the line. Vijay was also long due and he stepped up batting at 4. We are trying to take positives from this match and we’ll try to keep it up for the rest of the tournament.

Vijay Shankar: I have been bowling pretty well, I don’t know when I will get the ball so I just wanted to be ready whenever I’m called. I tried to take pace off, hit the hard length and bowl cross-seamed. We just thought we should take the game deep. We knew Jofra will come hard at us. Personally this was a do-or-die game for me. I batted just 18 balls prior to this. It was a good challenge and I was looking forward to something like this because it will give me a lot of confidence if I do well in that situation. I asked Manish if I should go for the shots because I didn’t want him to feel the pressure because of me and play a rash shot. We were communicating in that partnership, that’s why we were able to take the game deep.

SunRisers Hyderabad’s First win of IPL 2020 while chasing. An outstanding 8-wicket win for Hyderabad as they move to the number 5th spot – due to their superior run rate.

David Warner | Winning captain: I think the way we started was fantastic. We were able to bring it back after the powerplay. It’s been a complete game, we have been asking for. Good to see two guys (Pandey and Shankar) getting the reward for their hard work. I was frustrated. You try hard to get through the first over, but with someone bowling at 150ks, you can’t do much. You can take him on. We saw a lot of dew last night during training, and it came in again. Jason adds strength to our bowling, his experience, he’s an all-round package. He’s a great inclusion. It’s good to show people that we do have a middle-order. We haven’t lost early wickets before, so they haven’t got a chance. I have said in the past, we are a better defending team. You have to back yourself, no matter what. This cold weather and dew comes in.

Steve Smith | Losing captain:: We started well. Jofra taking two big wickets early but we couldn’t keep the foot on the pedal. Vijay played smart innings and Manish took the game on and played really nicely. I consulted a few other boys, it was talked about (giving Jofra another over up front) but opted against it and in hindsight, after what happened, probably would’ve given him one more over. It was on my mind. It (the wicket) got better as the game went on. It was slow and stopping in the first innings, it was one of those wickets which was quite hard to start on. We needed some more runs in the first innings. I can’t put my finger on anything, there are plenty of good players and good teams. We haven’t been able to pull back to back wins. We just need to keep winning and don’t know how things will work for us mathematically, we have to keep winning, that’s our job now.
